I’ve been recording pianos that John Allair has tuned and worked on at local recording studios for over 30 years. His tunings have a certain ring to them like nothing I’ve ever heard. And he’s not just a tuner. He has all sorts of little tricks that make pianos sound amazing and improves their Playability. When I got my current piano about 4 years ago it was Decent. But now it has a world class sound and action. I get so many complements on the piano.
John Allair has been excellently tuning the pianos at Mesa Recording for over twenty years, starting with my first Apollo grand. When I found the current piano, a Yamaha C7 for sale, John came with me to evaluate it. It was in the Piedmont home/studio of Ken Nash who had gotten it when the Automatt Studios were closed. Herbie Hancock had recorded with it and Frank Martin later told me he had played it there.
John examined it for a few minutes and came back into the control room where I was talking to Ken and whispered in my ear, “Write the check!”
The piano is loved by a lot of great players including Jonathon Alford, Frank Martin, Gary Remal Malkin, Dave Matthews, Ira Glass, and many more.
